Founded in 2002, with the support of the Oilmen’s Club in Taber, this team began its journey in the Lethbridge Men’s Slo-Pitch League. But what started as a passionate local group soon evolved into a powerhouse, leaving a mark not just on provincial diamonds, but across the national slo-pitch landscape for nearly two decades.
From 2008 to 2018, the Oilmen Softball Club carved out an unprecedented legacy: 11 consecutive Softball Alberta Provincial Championships – a feat that stands as the longest championship streak in Softball Alberta history. During this run, they reached every single provincial championship game in every provincial tournament entered, losing just once in over a decade.
Between 2015 and 2018, they posted a 117–17 record, a statistic that speaks to not just dominance, but an unwavering standard of excellence that few teams in any sport can match.
On the national stage, the Oilmen continued to make history, proudly representing Alberta at the Men’s Slo-Pitch Canadian Championships with incredible results:
- Gold Medals in 2013 & 2015
- Silver Medal in 2018
- Bronze Medal in 2016
Their 2013 national title was especially meaningful – it marked the first Canadian Championship gold medal for Alberta in 27 years, ending a decades-long drought and reigniting Alberta’s presence on the national slo-pitch scene. That moment wasn’t just a win, it was a turning point for slo-pitch in the province.
Beyond the banners and medals, the Oilmen Softball Club produced elite talent and leadership: 6 players were honoured with Softball Alberta Player of the Year awards and 8 players & 2 coaches would go on to represent Canada at Border Battle events, showcasing their skill and sportsmanship on the international stage.
The Oilmen played the game with intensity and class. They elevated the profile of slo-pitch in Alberta, inspired the next generation of athletes and built a culture that was both inclusive and competitive. Their success brought credibility and visibility to Alberta softball that continues to benefit the sport today.
Their story is one of loyalty, longevity and legacy. For 17 years, they wore the Oilmen name with pride and in doing so, raised the bar for what was possible in slo-pitch softball.
