BLAINE BORYS

Blaine’s lifelong dedication to softball as an administrator, coach, official and community leader has left a lasting impact not only in southeastern British Columbia but across Alberta.

Since moving to Elkford, BC in the early 1990’s, Blaine has been the driving force behind the growth and sustainability of youth softball in the region. In 1990, recognizing the need for structured programming, he founded the Elkford Minor Ball Association, which he has proudly led as President for 35 consecutive years. His vision created opportunities for hundreds of young athletes, many of whom may never have played without his leadership and tireless effort.

But Blaine’s influence didn’t stop there. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the South West Softball League, expanded access to coaching and pitching clinics across the East Kootenay and Southern Alberta regions and was instrumental in having the Elkford area officially integrated into Softball Alberta – a critical move that allowed local teams to compete more effectively at the provincial level.

Blaine’s softball resume includes:

  • Coach of the Year (Softball Alberta) – 2000
  • Head Coach of the resurrected University of Lethbridge Pronghorns program, where he was voted WCSA Coach of the Year
  • Certified Level II Softball Coach and Umpire
  • Hosted and organized multiple Provincial Championships
  • Spearheading the redevelopment of Elkford’s ball diamonds, leading volunteer efforts to rebuild shale infields and purchase batting cages
  • Organizer of annual community events like the Family Slo-pitch Tournament and Wildcat Days Family Slo-Pitch Tournament
  • Game Changer Award Recipient, recognizing transformative local sports leaders
  • Honoured in 2019 when Elkford officially renamed its main diamond “Blaine Borys Ball Diamond”
  • Community Sports Hero – Sport BC (2014)
  • Coal Miner of the Year (2003) for his volunteer contributions to youth sports

From player, to coach, to mentor, to sport builder, Blaine has been a pillar of softball for more than 35 years. His selfless dedication, leadership and passion for the game have shaped generations of athletes and created a lasting legacy that deserves to be honoured at the highest level.
